Born in Michigan, Jim has lived in Florida and New Jersey, but spent most his life in the Roanoke Valley. He currently lives in Virginia with his wife, Megan and their three children. Jim is the son of artist, Mary Jane Burtch and writer/ illustrator, William Burtch and his formal tutelage in art came from his mother, who taught children's classes in addition to having solo art shows all over America. Jim finds solace, peace and enjoyment from painting and is also an avid photographer. His inspiration comes from rich colours in his imagination and lifelong love for offbeat music and books. He is very drawn to Hispanic and West Indies artistry, with their wonderful murals, mosaics and crafts and that is very influential in his process. Being exposed to nature, exploring his musical sense, and the joy of being around his young children also play large part in his inspiration when painting.
